Description
ATHENS LOUNGE CHAIR
Designed by Thomas Pheasant for Baker Furniture | circa late 20th century | original label retained to underside
ref. 404JZG26P
30" H x 33 1/4" D x 27 5/8" W x 16 1/8" H to seat
The Athens Lounge Chair by Thomas Pheasant is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classical klismos form, pushing its elegant contours to their structural and aesthetic extremes. The chair’s sculptural frame is executed in rich hardwoods retaining a brilliant polish throughout. From every angle, the design showcases a balance between lightness and presence, with its lean silhouette and precisely calculated proportions allowing for a deep, supportive seat without excess bulk.
Custom-cast, ribbed bronze collars and capitals punctuate the design, lending a tactile contrast and a sense of architectural rhythm. These elements subtly amplify the chair’s presence, reinforcing its refined yet modern sensibility. The fine leather upholstery is very precisely tailored and presents beautifully against the frame - however, it shows some wear and blemish (see condition below and images).
One of our favorite contemporary chairs, the "Athens Lounge Chair" is a study in material interplay and timeless refinement, a perfect demonstration how an ancient archetype can evolve into a distinctly contemporary statement piece.
When it can be found, this chair generally retails for between $ 6500 - 9500 depending on the fabric/leather and various options. Condition:
The leather has remnants of old blue penmarks in light faded lines across the front of the seat cushion (approx. 6" in from the front edge) along with associated rubbing - these are hard to capture in the photos and video, but are present nonetheless and it would benefit from being professionally cleaned or recolored. Minor wear and abrading to the finish of the wood. Notwithstanding color blemishes to the leather, the chair is a very fine presentation and is ready to place. -
