Description
ENGLISH CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY WINE TABLE
With a pie-crust edge, acanthus carved tripodal legs terminating in scrolled French toes | circa 1760
Item # 408XJP21A
An exquisitely carved little wine table, the table features a "pie-crust" scalloped edge in the solid mahogany plank that makes up the top. This has been carefully formed from a stunning selection of the now extinct wood by turning down the top until the edge is raised, then carving and finishing the edge by hand all from the solid plank. A single fore-aft batten is affixed to the underside with eight screws, the vasiform and fluted baluster joining into this firmly and locking into the legs with oversized dovetail joints from the underside. The tripodal legs feature exquisite crisp acanthus carving that wraps over the knee as the cabriole leg gently tapers into the marvelous scrolled toes. A wonderful ruby hue comes through the old finish, this silky with refreshed layers of shellac and wax that impart a mellowed tone to the table - absolutely stunning. And despite being highly artistic and so light in design, it remains perfectly functional for regular use in the home.
Measurements: 26 3/4" H x approximately 20 1/2" diameter
Condition Report:
Old finish, not original but early and beautifully patinated; scuffs and natural wear throughout, all nicely joining the surface and quite attractive. Sturdy and strong in all joints. Repairs, splices and old cracks to the edge of the table top in several areas. A very fine presentation. -
