Description
BRASS AND GLASS COCKTAIL TABLE BY MAISON JANSEN
Mid-20th Century | signed JANSEN / PARIS to underside of foot
15 3/8" H x 28" W x 28" D
A square coffee table by Maison Jansen, the brass base with cylindrical legs joined by an X-form stretcher centered by a turned finial. The frame supports a thick, square glass top with beveled edges. One foot is stamped JANSEN PARIS to the underside. The brass retains a warm patina consistent with age and use.
Curator's Note:
Founded in Paris in 1880, Maison Jansen became one of the most influential interior design firms of the 20th century, blending classical forms with modern sensibilities. By the mid-century, the firm’s furniture designs often combined traditional European craftsmanship with the clean, functional lines favored in postwar interiors. This coffee table, with its brass frame, X-form stretcher and beveled glass top, reflects that synthesis. The Neoclassical finial and columnar legs nod to historic French design, while the transparent surface and spare geometry align with modernist ideals of openness and lightness. Pieces signed JANSEN PARIS, as seen here, are particularly sought after for their direct connection to the firm’s atelier production.
Condition: Brass worn and discolored with a nice aged surface patina throughout. An intentional bi-color to the metals: coppery in the upper, brassy in the lower. Glass with minor scuffs and scratches, overall in good condition.
