Description
1987 Mexican Leonora Carrington Surrealist Lithograph, Signed, Numbered #93/150
Offered for sale is a Surrealist lithograph by British-born artist, Leonora Carrington (1917–2011). The lithograph is typical of the artist, with fantasy characters and imaginary creatures throughout. It is numbered 93/150 in the lower left margin. It is signed in the lower right margin. The print is nicely displayed in a gilt-wood frame under glass. The work is dated 1987.
Carrington was a British-born Mexican artist and novelist who was recognized as one of the last prominent surrealist painters of the 1930s movement. Known for her dreamlike, intricate paintings, sculptures, and literature, she created fantastical, autobiographical, and mythological scenes, often focusing on the feminine and the natural world. She lived most of her life in Mexico City, where she became a pivotal figure in the post-war surrealist scene.
Born into an upper-class family in England, she rejected societal conventions to pursue art, studying under Amédée Ozenfant in London. She met Max Ernst in 1937, with whom she had a passionate relationship, and moved to Paris, joining the circle of artists including André Breton and Salvador Dalí.: After fleeing Nazi-occupied France and suffering a mental breakdown, she moved to Mexico in the 1940s, a period that allowed her to develop her own unique, independent artistic voice.
As depicted in this lithograph, Carrington's work frequently featured hybrid creatures, Celtic mythology, and hermetic symbols.
In 2025, she was recognized as the most valuable British-born female artist at auction. -
