Description
A highly refined PK31 lounge set by Poul Kjærholm for Fritz Hansen, produced in Denmark in 1988. This set includes a two-seater sofa, three-seater sofa, and two matching lounge chairs, presenting one of the most disciplined and elegant expressions of Danish modern design.
The PK31 is defined by its exact proportions, generous yet controlled leather cushions, and exposed steel frame, which gives the seating a distinctly architectural clarity. Kjærholm’s work consistently balanced softness and structure, and that tension is especially visible here: the upholstery feels inviting and deeply comfortable, while the frame remains crisp, rational, and almost industrial in its precision. The result is a seating system that is luxurious without excess and minimal without coldness.
This example is upholstered in warm cognac leather, which adds richness and depth to the otherwise restrained composition. The leather has aged beautifully and gives the set a sophisticated, lived-in elegance, while the chromed steel base keeps the profile visually light. As a full group, the set has strong presence and cohesion, equally suited to a serious modern interior or a collector-driven design environment.

Produced by Fritz Hansen, this set belongs to one of the most important traditions in Danish design. The history of Fritz Hansen is characterized by remarkable craftsmanship, unique design, and premium quality. Founded in Denmark in 1872, the company has become a global leader in furniture, lighting, and accessories, with a long-standing commitment to quality, fabrication, and enduring form. Guided by a passion for beauty, craftsmanship, and contemporary Nordic living, Fritz Hansen has collaborated with some of the most important names in design, including Arne Jacobsen, Cecilie Manz, Hans J. Wegner, Piero Lissoni, and Poul Kjærholm. Today, the brand is represented globally, with flagship stores in Copenhagen, San Francisco, Milan, and Tokyo, and its pieces are sold in more than 85 countries.
Within that history, the Kjærholm collection occupies a particularly important place. Kjærholm’s furniture is celebrated for its synthesis of steel, leather, and exacting proportion, and the PK31 remains one of his clearest statements: rigorous, timeless, and unmistakably Danish. -
