Harry Bertoia
American, 1915 - 1978
Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was an Italian-born American artist, sculptor, and designer. He is best known for his innovative furniture designs and sculptures made from metal wire.
Bertoia immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1930 and studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. He initially worked as a jewelry designer, but later began experimenting with metal wire as a medium for sculptural forms.
In the 1950s, Bertoia began working with the furniture manufacturer Knoll, creating a series of now-iconic wire chairs that are still in production today. These chairs were praised for their lightweight yet durable construction, as well as their elegant, minimalist design.
Bertoia's sculptural works, which often incorporated sound and movement, were exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He also designed other pieces of furniture, as well as architectural installations and jewelry.
Today, Bertoia's designs are highly collectible and continue to be produced and sold by leading design companies. His work is celebrated for its innovative use of materials and its ability to blur the boundaries between art and design.
