Description
An exceptional pair of gilt Louis XVI salon chairs, circa 1780.
The chairs are hand-carved and finished in gilt laid over gesso. Beautifully proportioned, the arms end with a flourishing scroll and curve down onto a neoclassical pilar resting on combination dice, each side with a floral decoration. Running through the d-shaped belt, sides and back-rest is a fine and deep carving ,featuring a twirling laurel and oak leaf pattern, set off by four elegantly tapering column legs and carved ribbed finials.
The chairs are structurally sound and bare a stamp to the underneath of front rail but years of upholstery nails have made it indecipherable, only a few letters are legible. Image attached of stamp.
An identical set was sold at Sothebys New York 2017 not stamped
Dimensions:
Armchairs, height 91cm x width 58cm x depth 50cm.
We also have another listing of a pair of Louis XVI salon chairs without arms but idententical carvings which would have been part of a set with these armchairs: height 87cm x width 49cm x depth 42cm. -
