Description
This early Warren McArthur umbrella stand, produced in Rome, New York, circa 1934, is a clear and well-preserved example of the firm’s patented tubular aluminum construction system. Retaining the important “Patent Applied For” designation, the piece belongs to the earliest phase of McArthur’s production, when his engineering-based approach to furniture design was still being actively developed and refined.
The stand is formed from anodized aluminum tubing arranged into a cylindrical framework, with six vertical supports connecting a continuous upper retaining ring to a circular base. A removable metal drip tray is set within the lower ring, designed to collect water from umbrellas and canes—an element frequently absent in surviving examples. The structure is assembled using McArthur’s characteristic ribbed and threaded couplings, visible at each junction, which secure internal steel rod reinforcement. This system provides rigidity while maintaining the lightweight, streamlined qualities of aluminum, and distinguishes McArthur’s work from contemporaneous tubular furniture.
Unlike designers such as Wolfgang Hoffmann or Donald Deskey, whose tubular forms typically rely on welded steel construction, McArthur developed a mechanically joined system based on precision-fitted components. The result is a design that reads as both functional and industrial, with its method of assembly forming an essential part of its visual language.
Functional objects of this type were produced in comparatively limited numbers and were subject to heavy use, making intact examples increasingly uncommon. The present stand retains its full structural integrity, including the original drip tray, and clearly expresses the technical clarity and disciplined construction that define early Warren McArthur production.
Within the broader context of American Machine Age design, McArthur’s work is distinguished by its engineering-first approach. This umbrella stand is best understood not simply as a utilitarian accessory, but as an early expression of a patented structural system that would later inform the firm’s contributions to aeronautical manufacturing during the Second World War.
Good vintage condition with even age-appropriate oxidation and surface wear to the anodized aluminum. Structure remains sound and stable with original ribbed couplings intact. Lower drip tray present with expected oxidation from use. No visible replacements or later modifications -
