Description
*This Harp chair is in the process of being restored.
Jørgen Høvelskov “Harp Chair,” 1968 — Christensen & Larsen, Denmark
A sculptural triumph of Danish modern design, the Harp Chair by Jørgen Høvelskov stands as one of the most visually striking and conceptually innovative lounge chairs of the 20th century. Designed in 1968 and produced by Christensen & Larsen, this iconic form blurs the line between furniture and art.
Crafted from laminated oak, the chair’s sweeping, organic frame creates a dramatic silhouette that feels both light and architectural. Its defining feature—the handwoven seat and back in durable flag halyard—fans outward in a rhythmic pattern, echoing the strings of a harp and giving the piece its poetic name. The result is a chair that appears almost weightless, yet offers surprising comfort through its ergonomic shaping and tensioned support.
Høvelskov’s background in industrial design is evident in the chair’s thoughtful balance of material and structure. Every curve serves a purpose, and every line contributes to the overall harmony of the piece. It is this clarity of vision that has elevated the Harp Chair to museum-level status, with examples held in the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum and other institutions worldwide.
Beyond the design world, the Harp Chair has also found a place in popular culture, notably appearing as set dressing in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, where it furnished Spock’s quarters aboard the Enterprise-A—an apt setting for a chair that feels both futuristic and timeless.
Dimensions: 54” H x 41.5” W x 39” D
At once bold and refined, the Harp Chair is a statement piece for collectors and interiors alike—an enduring example of Danish modernism’s ability to merge craftsmanship, innovation, and sculptural beauty. -
