Pair of Table Lamps in Brass and Plastic by Eje Ahlgren, 1950s

  • Description
This rare pair of table lamps, model B-075, designed by Eje Ahlgren and produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1950s, exemplifies the restrained elegance and technical sophistication characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Known for its precise proportions and functional elegance, the B-075 model reflects both Ahlgren’s modernist sensibility and Bergboms’ high production standards.

Each lamp features a fully brass construction with a distinctive dome-shaped shade, polished to a warm, reflective finish. Beneath the outer shade, a layered white diffuser—integrated into the inner structure—softens the light and prevents glare. This inner element ensures a balanced and ambient illumination, ideal for reading or creating an inviting atmosphere. The two-tiered diffuser system showcases a sophisticated understanding of both light distribution and material effect.

The lamp is anchored by a solid cylindrical brass stem and a weighted round base, offering both visual clarity and stability. The vertical profile is clean and understated, with all design elements focused on proportion, surface, and light behavior. The use of a pull cord switch adds a practical and authentic period detail while maintaining the minimal aesthetic integrity of the design.

Over time, the brass surfaces have developed a rich, natural patina, lending each lamp a depth of character and enhancing their vintage appeal. The aged finish contrasts subtly with the internal white diffusers, reinforcing the interplay of warm and cool tones—a hallmark of mid-century Nordic lighting.

The original Bergboms markings are present on the base of each lamp, confirming their authenticity. Bergboms, a prominent Swedish lighting manufacturer active in the 1950s and 60s, is well known for its collaborations with leading designers of the era, producing works that combined industrial precision with modernist design values.

Measuring 21 cm in width, 30 cm in depth, and 51 cm in height (approximately 8.3 x 11.8 x 20 inches), the lamps offer a substantial yet balanced scale, making them suitable for use on desks, bedside tables, or sideboards. Their sculptural form, coupled with their warm materials and soft light quality, allows them to function as both lighting and visual anchors within an interior.

This pair of model B-075 lamps stands as an excellent example of 1950s Scandinavian design—modest in scale, refined in detail, and deeply rooted in a philosophy of quality, usability, and quiet beauty. Their rarity, condition, and provenance make them highly collectible pieces within the canon of mid-century Nordic lighting.
