Description
Designed in the 1940s by Walter Gerdau, this reclining sun chaise lounge was originally conceived for transatlantic cruises traveling between Brazil and Europe, a context that demanded durability, comfort, and mechanical ingenuity. Executed in dark-toned hardwood, the structure is complemented by new cane applied to the seat, backrest, and leg rest, following traditional techniques consistent with the period.
The chaise reclines smoothly into two positions, allowing for upright lounging or full relaxation. Discreet wheels integrated into the front legs enable easy movement across decks or interiors, reinforcing its original functional purpose. The wood has been carefully refinished, preserving subtle signs of age that contribute to its authenticity while maintaining excellent overall condition. The original manufacturer’s seal remains intact behind the backrest, providing clear provenance.
Balancing elegance with utility, this piece exemplifies early Brazilian Modern design before it became codified—where craftsmanship, comfort, and international influence converged in furniture created for a mobile, sophisticated lifestyle. -
