Description
George Mulhauser “Mr. Chair” Lounge Chair & Ottoman — Rare Star Base, Walnut & Moss Green Leather
A striking and increasingly rare variation of the iconic Mr. Chair by George Mulhauser, this example stands apart with its seldom-seen metal star base configuration—an elegant departure from the more commonly found bentwood base. Designed in the early 1960s for Plycraft, Mulhauser’s Mr. Chair embodies the spirit of American modernism, offering a compelling blend of sculptural form, ergonomic comfort, and refined materials.
This set features beautifully contoured bent walnut plywood shells, showcasing rich grain and warm tonal variation that only improves with age. The organic curvature of the frame cradles the body, creating a lounge experience that feels both supportive and effortless—an intentional nod to the era’s pursuit of relaxed, modern living.
The chair and ottoman have been newly upholstered in luxurious moss green leather (typically found in vinyl), a color that feels both timeless and fresh. The deep tufting enhances the visual rhythm of the design while providing plush comfort. The pairing of walnut and green leather evokes a natural, almost architectural palette—grounded, sophisticated, and highly versatile in both modern and vintage interiors.
The polished aluminum star bases elevate the entire composition—literally and visually—adding a lightness and architectural precision that collectors seek out. This rare base configuration also gives the chair a more dynamic, floating presence compared to standard models.
Why This Piece Matters
The Mr. Chair is often celebrated as George Mulhauser's answer to the Eames Lounge Chair, offering similar comfort and aesthetic appeal at a more accessible production level. However, examples like this—featuring the star base and exceptional restoration—are far less common and increasingly desirable among collectors and designers alike.
At Hobbs Modern, we’ve carefully restored this piece to honor its original design while elevating its usability for modern living. The result is a chair that is both historically significant and ready for daily enjoyment.
