Description
16852: Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Jardinière with French Ormolu Mounts
Chinese and French, 19th Century
Height 33cm, width 50cm, depth 30cm
Created during the nineteenth century, this elegant jardinière combines a Chinese cloisonné enamel body with finely cast French ormolu mounts, reflecting the period’s strong fascination with Chinoiserie and the fusion of Eastern craftsmanship with European decorative arts.
The enamel body is richly decorated with floral sprays, birds, and butterflies set against a vibrant turquoise ground. Delicate gold wirework carefully outlines each motif, creating a finely detailed surface with remarkable clarity and decorative rhythm. Additional stylized borders and geometric friezes around the neck and shoulders further enrich the design, adding structure and visual complexity.
The form is enhanced by finely cast gilt bronze mounts, including a pierced gallery rim that adds both refinement and a sense of lightness. The sides are fitted with bold twin handles modelled as stylized dragons, their flowing, sculptural forms seamlessly integrated into the overall composition, adding a dramatic, exotic character.
The jardinière is raised on an ornate openwork base supported by four monopodia legs terminating in mythical beast heads. This elevated structure not only increases its visual presence but also reinforces its sculptural, almost architectural quality.
The contrast between the vivid turquoise enamel and the warm, luminous gilding creates a striking decorative effect, highlighting both materials to full advantage. Conceived as both a functional vessel and a decorative object, it embodies the nineteenth-century taste for richly ornamented, cross-cultural design.
Both visually dynamic and highly refined, this piece stands out as an exceptional example of Chinese craftsmanship enhanced by French bronze mounting traditions, making it a distinguished and impactful centrepiece.
