Description
Elegant late 50s pair of lanterns attr. to Stilnovo -
The Italian lighting manufacturer Stilnovo was founded by Bruno Gatta in 1946 in Lainate, on the industrial outskirts of Milan. In the aftermath of the Second World War, while Italy dedicated itself to the reconstruction of its economy left in poor condition, Gatta and Stilnovo dedicated themselves to the production of innovative lighting elements, capable of incorporating rationalism and the principles of forms linked to functionalism . After the war, the designer Gaetano Sciolari was hired by the company and, while Italy recovered, Stilnovo became synonymous with a prestigious and fashionable brand, popular for both public and private spaces. In the mid-1960s Bruno's son, Dino Gatta, decided to invite some of the best designers of the time to develop new products; Stilnovo thus becomes a real receptacle for innovative design ideas and a laboratory for experimenting with materials. Prominent creations of this futuristic era include the Periscopio floor lamp (1967) by Danilo & Corrado Aroldi, the Treiedo spotlight (1970) and the adjustable wall lamp Topo (1970) by Joe Colombo, the Lucetta table lamp (1970 ) by Cini Boeri, and the desk lamps Fante (1978) by De Pas, D'Urbino, Lomazzi, and Valigia (1977) by Ettore Sottsass. Many of Stilnovo's pieces were exhibited at MoMA on the occasion of the historic Italy: The New Domestic Landscape exhibition in 1972. Massimo Anselmi, artistic director of the world of fashion design and contemporary art buys Stilnovo in 2012, launching the following year new editions of Stilnovo's iconic designs at the Milan Motor Show -
