Description
18174: Large Wagnerian Mythological Painting “The Rhinemaidens” by Leeke
German, 1917
Canvas: height 119 cm, width 151 cm, depth 2 cm;
Frame: height 152 cm, width 185 cm, depth 9 cm;
This dramatic and highly atmospheric painting by Ferdinand Leeke depicts the mythical Rhinemaidens from Richard Wagner’s operatic cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. Leeke was a German painter particularly renowned for his Wagnerian subjects, many of which were commissioned in connection with performances and publications of Wagner’s works.
The composition presents the water-nymph Rhinemaidens in a dynamic and turbulent river setting, rendered with vivid movement and strong theatrical intensity. The figures are shown in a moment of heightened drama, emerging from swirling waters and interacting with human characters drawn into their mythic world. The scene is charged with tension, reflecting the opera’s themes of desire, power, and supernatural fate.
Leeke’s characteristic style combines Romantic narrative painting with a highly illustrative clarity, using bold contrasts of colour and expressive composition to heighten the emotional impact of the scene. The interplay between the figures and the elemental forces of water and light reinforces the mythological atmosphere of Wagner’s universe.
A powerful and evocative example of early 20th-century German mythological painting, it captures both the theatrical grandeur of Wagnerian opera and the painter’s distinctive narrative intensity.
