Description
Raeren (Germany then, Belgium now)
Jan Baldems Mennicken
End of the 16th century
This brownish glazed stoneware jug has a frieze running around the body. The main decoration of the frieze is the coat of arms of Amsterdam on a Renaissance shield, held by two griffons. To the left and right of the griffons are two coats of arms, with the coat of arms of Saksen on the left and the coat of arms of the Van Bassen family on the right. The neck is decorated with an ornamental frieze with a mascaron in the center. The handle runs from the top of the neck into a tail on the body.
The model of this jug was developed by Jan Emens Mennicken from 1568 onward and was quite popular in the late 16th century. This style of decoration with a coat of arms held by two griffons can be attributed to Jan Baldems Mennicken.
The jug is in excellent condition, with only small chips from the base and handle.
With wonderful wear of use and age. -
