Description
A striking and decorative wool rug designed by Aapo Härkönen in Finland during the 1950s–1960s. Executed in rich moss and olive green tones, the design is built around a repeating geometric motif that creates a rhythmic sense of movement across the surface. The interplay between the lighter and darker shades gives the composition depth and visual dynamism while remaining distinctly Scandinavian in its restraint and balance.
One of the most appealing features of the rug is its reversible construction. The pattern appears in inverted colors on the opposite side, effectively offering two complementary expressions within the same piece. This versatility allows the rug to adapt effortlessly to a variety of interiors, from Mid-Century Modern and Scandinavian settings to more contemporary spaces seeking warmth, texture, and subtle graphic interest.
The rug displays the tactile qualities and craftsmanship associated with Finnish textile design of the postwar period. Its elongated format makes it particularly suitable for living rooms, dining areas, studios, hallways, or beneath a seating arrangement where its strong geometric pattern can be fully appreciated.
The rug remains in good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There is some slight discoloration and minor age-related variation in tone, which only adds to its authentic character and history. Please refer to the photographs for details.
Aapo Härkönen was among the Finnish textile artists who helped shape the modern Scandinavian aesthetic through bold geometric compositions, natural materials, and an emphasis on craftsmanship. This example is a particularly attractive representation of that design tradition. -
