Description
“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him…”
Matthew 2:11
This beautiful painting captures the quiet awe of the Three Kings as they arrive before the Christ Child. It is most likely a 19th Century copy after a now-lost 16th Century work by Quinten Massijs, made during a period when artists and collectors were rediscovering the great Early Netherlandish masters. Even as a later copy, it is of remarkable quality and preserves the spirit of an important lost composition.
The Three Kings kneel in richly painted robes, each absorbed in the moment before them. The Christ Child leans gently forward from Mary’s arms, meeting them with a calm, almost knowing presence. Around them, angels hover softly in the air, while shepherds look on from behind stone architecture, as if witnessing something both extraordinary and very human.
Beyond the figures, the landscape opens out into a carefully observed world: riders tending horses by a river, clusters of low country houses, and a distant fortified castle. These details ground the sacred story in everyday life, as if to say this moment belongs not only to heaven, but to the world as we know it.
Above it all, a clear blue sky stretches across the scene. The sun sits just below the horizon, quietly present, never competing with the light of the Child at the centre of the story.
