Description
A rare signed edition of the Fauteuil Éléphant or Elephant Chair, designed by French artist and sculptor Bernard Rancillac. The design was originally conceived in 1966 and exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1968. In 1985, a numbered edition of 100 examples was produced, each signed by the artist. This particular chair is marked Rancillac 37/100.
As its name suggests, the chair takes inspiration from the form of an elephant. The sculptural fiberglass seat is supported by a black-coated steel frame with a distinctive horseshoe-shaped base. Combining artistic expression with functional seating, the design reflects Rancillac’s multidisciplinary practice and remains a striking example of late twentieth-century French collectible design. Equally suited to mid-century modern, postmodern, or space-age inspired interiors, the Elephant Chair stands as both a piece of furniture and a sculptural object. - More Information
