Description
A remarkable French modernist highboard crafted in solid oak and oak veneer during the Reconstruction period, circa 1955. Defined by its distinctive trapezoidal silhouette, the cabinet gently flares towards the top, giving it a bold architectural presence rarely encountered in post-war French furniture. A series of finely hand-sculpted wooden pulls introduces a dynamic rhythm across the façade, their aerodynamic forms subtly evoking the optimism of the Atomic Age. Raised on elegantly tapered legs, the cabinet offers generous storage through a central bank of drawers flanked by shelved compartments.
Following extensive comparative research, we believe this piece belongs within the tradition of French Reconstruction furniture, characterised by geometric forms, restrained material palettes and outstanding craftsmanship. Its proportions and refined detailing recall the work of independent ébénistes and ateliers working in the orbit of the ARP group, Alain Richard and Jacques Dumond, although no documented attribution can presently be made. Despite comparisons with published examples and international collections, we have not identified another documented cabinet combining this unusual silhouette with such distinctive carved handles, making it a particularly rare and compelling example of French post-war cabinetmaking. -
