French 19th Century Silverplate Bouillotte Table Lamp

A lovely silver-plated French bouillotte lamp, this former candelabra was converted to electric for three candelabra-base bulbs. Bouillotte is a card game that became popular in France during the 18th & 19th centuries. For light, they would use a specialized bouillotte lamp: as candles would burn down the metal shade could be lowered on the central rod so the players were free of glare. This example uses a painted green metal shade (beige interior with spotted oxidation) that still adjusts if desired, for soft illumination in any room. The incredible base has three looped arms like a French horn instrument rising from the heavy base engraved with a multitude of decorative motifs. Recently rewired by a professional electrician for the US using UL listed parts, adding an in-line switch. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering the age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
