Description
The T-605 ceiling lamp, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson in 1965 and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, is a refined and atmospheric example of Scandinavian lighting design from the mid-20th century. Distinguished by its material sensitivity and poetic treatment of light, the lamp exemplifies Jakobsson’s philosophy of creating luminaires that go beyond function to shape mood and space.
The structure features a polished brass frame that anchors the design both visually and structurally. The brass, now displaying a soft, natural patina, reflects a warm, golden sheen that subtly enhances the lamp’s glow when in use. This warm metallic base forms a gentle contrast to the layered silk fringes that define the lamp’s silhouette.
The shade is composed of cascading fringes arranged in concentric tiers, crafted in a neutral beige tone. These silk fringes offer both material richness and a tactile, almost kinetic visual experience. Their gentle movement and organic drape soften the contours of the lamp and diffuse the light in a uniquely atmospheric manner. When illuminated, the fringes filter the light with a warm, enveloping quality that creates a quiet, ambient glow, ideal for intimate interior environments.
Jakobsson’s use of fringe in lighting—innovative at the time—was a response to the sterility of harsher modernist lighting. With the T-605, he explored how softness, shadow, and movement could contribute to emotional comfort in a space. The fringe shade operates almost like a fabric veil, breaking the harsh lines of electric light and transforming it into something more natural and nuanced.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009), trained as both a carpenter and architect, was known for his ability to reimagine traditional materials in unexpected ways. Through his namesake company in Markaryd, he produced lighting that brought warmth, serenity, and sensory appeal to both residential and public interiors. His designs, especially those from the 1950s and 1960s, continue to be revered for their sculptural and atmospheric qualities.
This particular T-605 lamp is in excellent vintage condition. The brass frame is well-preserved with only slight patina, adding depth and authenticity to its appearance. The silk fringe remains intact, retaining its neutral color and elegant drape, with no fraying or fading—a rarity for pieces of this vintage.
As a sculptural lighting piece, the T-605 embodies Jakobsson’s ideal: a lamp that not only illuminates but enhances the emotional and visual experience of its environment. It is a collector-worthy work that speaks to the enduring relevance of Scandinavian lighting design.
