Brazilian Modern Credenza by Giuseppe Scapinelli in Brazilian Rosewood

$ 48,500
  • Description
    An exceptional credenza by Giuseppe Scapinelli, executed in richly figured Brazilian rosewood during the 1950s. A masterful example of the designer’s ability to reconcile sculptural expression with functional elegance, the piece embodies the architectural sophistication that distinguishes Scapinelli among the leading figures of Brazilian Modernism.

    The design is defined by its striking asymmetrical composition and remarkable sense of visual lightness. A floating cabinet volume rests above a continuous lower shelf, while the elongated platform extends beyond the cabinet body at both ends, culminating in sculptural wing-like forms that lend the piece a dynamic architectural presence. Elevated on finely tapered legs terminating in brass sabots, the credenza appears to hover effortlessly despite its substantial scale.

    The façade showcases an extraordinary bookmatched rosewood veneer arrangement, creating dramatic, flame-like patterns across the cabinet doors. The exquisite selection of Brazilian rosewood reveals exceptional depth and movement, with richly figured grain and warm reddish undertones that exemplify the finest craftsmanship of the period.

    Beyond its sculptural qualities, the credenza offers a highly functional and thoughtfully organized storage configuration. Three cabinet doors conceal generous interior storage divided into three independent compartments, providing ample concealed space for a variety of uses. At one end, an open display niche offers an ideal setting for books, collectibles, or decorative objects, creating a visual counterpoint to the enclosed cabinetry. Beneath, a full-length open shelf spans nearly the entire width of the piece, further expanding storage and display possibilities while reinforcing the floating quality of the design.

    The seamless integration of storage, display, and architectural form reflects Scapinelli’s unique design language, where practicality is elevated through elegant proportion and meticulous detailing. Rarely does a large-scale storage piece achieve such a compelling balance between functionality and sculptural refinement.

    An outstanding and highly collectible example of Brazilian Mid-Century Modern design by one of the movement’s most celebrated masters.
