Description
Sebastián Matta (1911–2002) was a Chilean-born artist, architect, and designer, internationally celebrated as one of the leading figures of Surrealism. After studying architecture in Santiago and working briefly with Le Corbusier in Paris, he became closely associated with André Breton and the Surrealist movement. Matta's visionary paintings, characterized by dynamic, dreamlike spaces and organic forms, had a profound influence on post-war art and Abstract Expressionism. In addition to painting, he explored furniture and interior design, bringing the same imaginative and sculptural approach to functional objects. Today, his works are held in major museum collections worldwide and are highly sought after by collectors.
MAgriTTA is an iconic armchair designed by Sebastián Matta for Simon Gavina in 1971 as part of the Ultramobile collection. Inspired by the surreal imagery of René Magritte, it combines a black bowler hat-shaped shell with a soft green apple seat, blurring the boundaries between art and furniture. More than a functional object, MAgriTTA is a sculptural design that celebrates imagination, playfulness, and the dialogue between Surrealism and Italian Radical Design.
