Vintage Pair Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin Swivel Egg Lounge Chairs, USA 1960s

$ 7,950
  • Description
    Exceptional pair of 1960s Mid-Century Modern swivel lounge chairs designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin, handcrafted in High Point, North Carolina. Their dramatic sculptural form features a high, enveloping egg-shaped back that flows seamlessly into the arms and base, creating a sophisticated silhouette from every angle.

    Each chair rests on a concealed 360-degree swivel mechanism and includes a generously padded removable seat cushion. The proportions are substantial yet elegant, making these chairs particularly well suited for interior designers, architects and collectors seeking statement seating for a living room, library, bedroom, dressing room, hotel, lounge or hospitality project.

    The chairs retain their original chocolate-brown upholstery, which shows considerable wear, staining and discoloration and should be reupholstered. For a design professional, this presents an excellent opportunity to specify a new bouclé, mohair, velvet, shearling or textured designer fabric while preserving the chairs' distinctive sculptural profile. One chair retains its original Thayer Coggin, Inc., High Point, North Carolina manufacturer's label to the underside.

    These vintage Baughman lounge chairs embody his celebrated approach to comfortable, sophisticated and functional modern furniture, combining an architectural silhouette with an inviting, almost cocoon-like seating experience.

    Measurements: 32.5 in. H × 31 in. W × 30 in. D × 15.5 in. seat height.

    Condition: Structurally good vintage condition with functioning swivel mechanisms. Original upholstery has extensive staining, discoloration, wear and age-related marks throughout. Reupholstery is recommended. Please refer to the detailed photographs.

    Milo Baughman (1923–2003) was among the most influential American furniture designers of the 20th century. His collaboration with Thayer Coggin began in 1953 and continued for approximately 50 years, producing some of the most recognizable designs of American modernism. His work was included in MoMA's influential "Good Design" exhibition and the Whitney Museum's "High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design." In 1987, Baughman received the American Society of Furniture Designers' Distinguished Designer Award.
