Nude with Wet Drapery — Vintage Heliogravure by Sylvio Rey, 1940

Description
A striking heliogravure by Sylvio Rey, 1940, depicting a female nude sheathed in clinging, wet drapery, the fabric streaming across the body in long diagonal folds and pooling in shadow. The effect recalls the "wet drapery" technique prized since antiquity — most famously in the Nike of Samothrace — in which soaked fabric is used to reveal, rather than conceal, the form beneath it. Rendered in high contrast and cropped tightly against a plain ground, the image sits closer to abstraction than to conventional figure study, with the fabric's rippling folds transformed into a sweeping, almost sculptural pattern of light and shadow. The rich blacks and finely graduated tones are characteristic of the heliogravure process, an intaglio printing technique valued for its exceptional depth and permanence.
Presented in a gilt-toned frame with a wide off-white mat. In excellent vintage condition, consistent with age. -
