Scandinavian Modern Bronze Box, 1930s

This bronze box, produced by Danish silversmith and metalworker Einar Dragsted, stands as a refined example of mid-century decorative arts in Denmark. Cast in solid bronze, the box is adorned with a series of intricately rendered zodiac motifs that reflect a deep appreciation for classical symbolism and precise metalwork. Each side panel features an individually embossed zodiac sign, arranged in a continuous narrative band around the body of the box. These reliefs are detailed with sculptural clarity, combining mythological iconography with stylized ornamentation.

The lid is crowned with a circular relief medallion at its center, depicting celestial elements—stars, constellations, and astral figures—arranged in a compact, symbolically rich composition. The surface exhibits a subtle, darkened patina that highlights the recessed details and lends the object a sense of antiquity and permanence. The finish, likely achieved through a combination of chemical patination and natural aging, gives the box depth and tonal variation while enhancing its sculptural qualities.

Opening the box reveals a finely crafted oakwood interior, smooth and warm in contrast to the cool, textured exterior.
