Description
A comprehensive, richly illustrated monograph on Demetre Chiparus, the celebrated Romanian-French sculptor whose chryselephantine (bronze-and-ivory) figures of dancers epitomize the glamour of the Art Deco era. Written by Alberto Shayo, this Second Edition expands on the definitive study of Chiparus's life and work, tracing his artistic development, his collaborations with the great Parisian foundries (including the Etling and Lehmann companies), and his influence from Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and the Parisian music halls of the 1920s.
The volume features an extensive plate section with full-color photographs of iconic works — including Semiramis, Antinea, Alméria, Starfish, and Bacchanal — alongside period archival material such as original foundry bills of sale, catalog pages, and title plaques. Detailed captions note medium, dimensions, and provenance for each piece, making this an essential reference for collectors, dealers, and admirers of Art Deco sculpture.
Hardcover with dust jacket, published by Abbeville Press. A striking coffee-table volume as much at home as a design object in its own right as it is a scholarly reference.
