Description
This 19th-century French chest belongs to the tradition of vernacular Art Populaire furniture, where functional household objects were given an individual decorative language through direct, hand-worked craftsmanship. Built from substantial wooden boards, the chest stands on four broad supports and opens through a hinged top fitted with long iron strap hinges. The façade is particularly distinctive, with repeated geometric incisions and carved motifs arranged around the central iron lock plate, while vertical framing members and restrained moulded details give structure to the composition. Irregularities, wear and tonal variation across the timber testify to its age and long history of use, contributing to the deeply developed surface characteristic of rural furniture of this kind. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
