Description
This large 19th-century French wooden chest is a characterful example of vernacular furniture, constructed from broad wooden planks with a notably long, low profile. The hinged top is fitted with substantial hand-forged iron strap hinges and hardware, while an iron lock plate remains visible at the centre of the front. Its straightforward construction and restrained detailing are characteristic of furniture made primarily for practical domestic use.
Decades of use have left the wood with pronounced tonal variation, marks, irregularities and areas of deeper patination, giving the chest a particularly expressive surface. Variations between individual boards and the visible ironwork emphasize its handmade construction and material history. Its substantial 227 cm width makes it an unusually elongated example of the traditional storage chest. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care. -
