Pair of Elizabeth Chairs in Wengé and Leather by Ib Kofod-Larsen, 1956

This very rare pair of easy chairs, model U56—widely known as the Elizabeth Chair—was designed in 1956 by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by the esteemed Danish cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen. As one of the most celebrated designs of Kofod-Larsen’s career, the U56 exemplifies the core values of Danish mid-century modernism: sculptural form, superior craftsmanship, and an uncompromising dedication to material quality.

Each chair features a finely constructed frame made of solid wengé wood, a dense and richly grained tropical hardwood that was rarely used in Danish furniture production due to its rarity and complexity to work with. The wood exhibits deep brown to almost black tones with subtle figuring and a tactile, oiled finish that enhances the organic elegance of the form. The joints are seamless, and the frame’s silhouette is defined by soft curves and angular transitions, most notably in the armrests, which flare outward with a sculptural lightness that belies the strength of the structure.
