Set of 8 Cal Mode Walnut and Sage Green Dining Chairs, Los Angeles 1960s

Distinctive set of eight vintage Mid-Century Modern dining chairs by Cal Mode Furniture Mfg. Co., manufactured in Culver City, California, during the 1960s.

Each chair features a solid walnut frame with a warm brown finish, long tapered legs and a tall, architecturally framed backrest. The original muted sage-green upholstery has a soft, mohair-like feel. Vertical channeling and button-tufted diamond detailing give the high backs a tailored and sophisticated appearance, while the generously cushioned seats provide comfortable dining.

An excellent example of California Modern and postwar American furniture, the chairs balance Danish Modern restraint with a subtle Hollywood Regency sensibility. Their refined lines make them well suited to Mid-Century Modern, contemporary, organic modern or eclectic interiors. They will appeal to collectors and designers drawn to the work of Edward Wormley, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Paul McCobb, Harvey Probber and Milo Baughman; these names are offered solely as stylistic references.

All eight chairs retain their original Cal Mode manufacturer labels documenting their Culver City, California origin. Offered as a complete set of eight armless dining or side chairs.

Each chair measures 40.25 inches high × 18 inches wide × 22.5 inches deep. Seat height is 19 inches.


Condition
Vintage condition. The original upholstery displays age-related wear, staining, discoloration and surface marks, as shown in the photographs. The walnut frames show normal wear consistent with age and use.
