An exceptionally rare and highly sculptural eight-light chandelier designed by Gunnel Nyman for Idman Oy in Finland during the 1950s, model no. 51110.
The chandelier presents an expressive, almost floral composition. Eight individually angled opaline glass shades rise like opening flower buds from a flowing arrangement of gracefully curved brass arms. Delicate looped-brass galleries embrace the base of each shade, adding an exceptionally refined decorative detail.
The arms gather around the central stem in an organic, asymmetrical arrangement, giving the chandelier a sense of movement from every viewing angle. Despite its impressive one-metre diameter, the open construction keeps the composition elegant and visually light. When illuminated, the opaline glass produces a soft and atmospheric glow.
The brass has developed a rich, naturally varied patina that emphasizes the chandelier’s sculptural lines and gives the surface warmth and character. The opaline glass shades are later replacements, carefully selected for their softly curved form and compatibility with the design.
Gunnel Nyman was one of Finland’s most important and internationally celebrated 20th-century designers. Best known for her poetic glasswork, she brought the same sensitivity to materials, proportions, and organic forms to her lighting designs. Large and elaborate chandeliers designed by Nyman for Idman Oy are particularly rare.
With its generous scale and striking silhouette, model 51110 would make an exceptional focal point in a dining room, entrance hall, staircase, living room, or hospitality interior.
