Haitian Vodou Portrait of Lwa, Loa, Oil on Masonite board. Christie's Auction

Portrait of lwa. Lwa, also called loa, are spirits in the African diasporic religion of Haitian Vodou.
In Haitian Vodou, lwa (also spelled loa) are the primary spirits that serve as intermediaries between humanity and Bondye, the supreme creator God. Vodouists believe in a single, distant God, meaning they do not pray to Bondye directly; instead, they "serve the spirits" (sèvi lwa) to navigate daily life, health, protection, and destiny
Robert Saint-Brice was a former Vodou Priest and painter who joined Le Centre D'Art in Port-au-Prince in 1949. His art externalized his inner beliefs.
