Description
One of Alvar Aalto’s most iconic lighting designs, the A331 pendant, commonly known as the “Beehive,” was created in 1953. Its sculptural form is composed of layered rings that filter the light while giving the substantial fixture a surprisingly light and floating appearance. Inspired by organic forms found in nature, the design was remarkably forward-looking and retains its distinctly modern, almost futuristic character more than 70 years later.
This example dates from the late 1990s or early 2000s and belongs to the final period of production in Finland before manufacturing moved abroad. It is a substantial, high-quality version featuring solid brass rings, rather than the brass-plated aluminum used in later production. The lamp is stamped “Artek” and is fitted with an approximately two-meter-long cable, allowing the hanging height to be adjusted to suit the interior. At the moment it hangs at 130cm.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with its period.
Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was one of the most influential architects and designers of the 20th century. Together with his wife, Aino Aalto, he developed complete interiors in which architecture, furniture, lighting, textiles, and glassware formed a harmonious whole. Many of Aalto’s lighting designs were originally conceived for specific architectural projects before entering production through Artek, the company founded in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl.
Aalto’s furniture and lighting are celebrated for their balance of functionality, technical innovation, and organic form. His pioneering experiments with bent wood and plywood had a profound influence on modern furniture design, while his lamps remain enduring examples of Finnish modernism. His work is represented in leading museum collections worldwide and continues to be highly sought after by collectors, architects, and interior designers. -
