Description
This handsome Pair of Art Deco Eliel Saarinen for Johnson Walnut w/ Pulls & Smoked Glass Top tables/nightstands originated in the United States, circa 1940. The set comprises two complementary vertical cases, one fitted with a stacked run of five drawer fronts and the other configured as a single door cabinet, each maintaining a disciplined geometric profile characteristic of late Deco design. The pulls have brushed aluminum supports while broad walnut veneers wrap the cases in a deep, even brown finish that emphasizes grain and conveys the restrained luxury of the period. The tops are fitted with dark smoked glass that reads with a warm bronze tone and sits slightly recessed within a narrow perimeter rail, offering a tempered reflective surface that balances the wood. A incredible example of the Machine Ages influence on Art Deco furniture in America. Each case is fitted with elongated polished aluminum pulls that terminate in inset walnut returns, creating a refined contrast between warm wood and cool metal and reinforcing the composition's linearity. The drawer and door faces present as flush, planar planes, and the pieces rise on shallow plinth bases that accentuate their tall, linear proportions and overall verticality. Both pieces are in mint restored condition.
