Description
This Italian Mid-Century bar cabinet, produced by La Permanente Mobili Cantù during the 1950s–60s, is defined by an architectural composition that combines refined cabinetmaking with a distinctly sculptural presence.
The cabinet is constructed in richly figured wood veneers, with the front articulated through a carefully balanced combination of geometric chevron patterns and vertically ribbed panels. The contrast between these two treatments gives the otherwise symmetrical structure a sense of movement, while the warm variations in the wood grain remain central to the design.
Its most distinctive feature is the elevated bridge structure, formed by slender wooden uprights supporting a long suspended upper element. Brass fittings connect and articulate the structure, while the tapered, angled legs extend the architectural character of the piece down to the floor. Small brass feet and hardware provide restrained metallic accents against the warm wood.
The front opens to reveal a highly functional interior. The central section incorporates a glazed compartment with glass shelves, while the two lateral sections provide generous storage with multiple shelves. A series of drawers occupies the lower central portion, making the cabinet suitable not only as a bar but also as a sophisticated storage piece for a living or dining room.
The construction is particularly interesting in the way decorative elements are integrated into the architecture of the cabinet rather than simply applied as ornament. The chevron veneer, ribbed surfaces, suspended upper structure and tapered supports work together as a single composition, reflecting the Italian approach to furniture design of the period.
A substantial example of Italian Mid-Century cabinetmaking, this piece combines practical storage with a strong architectural character and would sit naturally within both period interiors and more contemporary settings. Its elaborate construction and distinctive configuration make it a less conventional and highly recognizable example of the Italian design tradition associated with Cantù.
