Description
Gio Ponti for Fontana Arte ceiling light in beveled clear glass, opaline glass, brass and painted aluminum, Milan, Italy, circa 1940. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Gio Ponti Archives.
This modernist ceiling light is composed around a broad circular disc of clear beveled glass, centered by an opaline glass diffuser framed in brass. Above, tapering vertical glass elements surround the slender brass suspension, creating a strong architectural contrast between the horizontal plane of the large glass disc and the vertical structure of the fixture. The restrained combination of transparent glass, opaline glass, brass and painted aluminum gives the light an unusually refined and sculptural presence.
The design demonstrates Ponti’s sophisticated use of glass as both a structural and luminous element. Rather than treating the shade as a conventional enclosure, the large transparent beveled glass disc appears almost weightless, while its finished edge gives the composition additional definition and refinement. The opaline central diffuser concentrates and softens the illumination. Decorative brass fittings accent the central stem and diffuser, while the geometric glass elements above the disc emphasize the fixture’s strong vertical profile.
Gio Ponti played a formative role in the development of Fontana Arte, helping establish the company’s distinctive integration of architecture, industrial design and exceptional glass production. This circa 1940 ceiling light is a particularly refined example of Ponti’s early lighting for Fontana Arte, balancing transparency, geometry and illumination in a distinctly architectural design. -
