Description
A generously scaled Brazilian modern dining table designed by Jorge Jabour for Móveis Cantú, Brazil, circa 1960s. Architectural in composition and exceptionally expressive in its use of rosewood, the table brings together a broad rectangular surface, sculptural trestle supports, and carefully resolved construction. Its presence derives from the relationship between substantial timber, restrained geometry, and the extraordinary movement of the grain.
The elongated tabletop extends beyond two inset T-shaped supports, creating a strong horizontal silhouette with generous overhangs at either end. Softly rounded corners and a gently eased perimeter temper the rectangular form, giving the edge a tactile quality. Beneath the top, upright supports meet long transverse feet, while horizontal connecting members establish a clear structural rhythm. The lower stretcher projects beyond the uprights in rounded rectangular ends—an understated detail that makes the construction part of the design’s visual identity.
The solid rosewood base demonstrates the material sensitivity of Jabour’s work for Cantú. Broad faces reveal the timber’s figuring, while softened edges and smoothly finished transitions lend refinement to otherwise substantial structural elements. The open trestle configuration preserves a sense of space beneath the generously proportioned top, balancing the table’s considerable material presence with visual lightness.
Brazilian rosewood, traditionally known as jacarandá, provides the defining character of the piece. Deep chocolate-brown veins move through warmer reddish-brown passages, forming elongated streaks, swirling figures, and richly varied concentrations of color. Across the tabletop, this natural pattern becomes a continuous visual field; along the feet, uprights, and stretchers, it gives each component its own distinct expression. The wood has aged beautifully, acquiring a depth of tone that complements the precision of the design.
Jorge Jabour Mauad belongs to the architect-designers whose furniture contributed to the development of Brazilian modern interiors during the 1960s. Together with architect Osires Cunha Meale, he was responsible for the furniture designs of Cantù Móveis e Interiores. His work offers a valuable perspective on Brazilian modernism through the close relationship between architectural thinking, domestic function, and the expressive use of materials. This table embodies that approach through its legible structure, measured proportions, and emphasis on finely worked rosewood.
Recently restored and refinished, the table presents with a smooth satin surface that reveals the richness of the grain while retaining the wood’s natural tonal variation and mature character. Its generous scale and composed silhouette make it a substantial example of Brazilian modern dining furniture, with craftsmanship expressed through proportion, material selection, and the careful treatment of every visible edge. -
