Description
This graphic and stunning Mid-Century Harvey Probber 4-Piece Deep Tufted Modular Sofa in Platinum Velvet originated in the United States during the latter half of the 20th Century. The design is a low rectilinear sectional composed of four independent upholstered modules that join to form a continuous, enveloping seat and back. Each module is worked into a pronounced grid of deep tufting that produces heavily padded, squared cushions running across the seat plane and up the inner arms. A continuous row of rounded bolsters along the top of the back unifies the composition and gives the piece a rhythmic, block-like silhouette. The upholstery is a platinum-hued velvet with a soft pile that accentuates the tufting and the rounded forms, highlighting the contrast between the quilted surfaces and the bolstered top. Harvey Probber (1922–2003) was an American furniture designer and manufacturer, born in Brooklyn, who founded Harvey Probber, Inc. in 1945 after early work selling furniture sketches and learning production at Trade Upholstery; contemporary obituary reporting also notes evening study at Pratt Institute. He is chiefly important in postwar American modern furniture for modular seating: the New York School of Interior Design credits him with conceiving and introducing an early modular seating system in the 1940s, a format later absorbed into mainstream furniture practice. Its modular nature supports a range of layouts, allowing homeowners to adapt the ensemble for intimate conversation, sprawling relaxation, or formal seating plans. This sofa will style beautifully in a wide array of spaces and settings, from Mid-Century Modernist to Contemporary and Modernist Interiors. In Mint Restored Condition.
