Paul McCobb
American, 1917 - 1969
Born in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1917, Paul McCobb had an interest in art from an early age. After a stint studying drawing and painting at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, he began designing retail interiors and displays. Fascinated by furniture design, McCobb moved to New York, and in 1945, established his own firm, Paul McCobb Design Associates. Inspired by classical forms, Paul McCobb furniture was designed to be functional and approachable. He is best known for his Planner Series—a moderately-priced collection that became one of the most popular furniture lines of the 1950s. The series remained in production until 1964. In addition to his coveted chairs and furniture, McCobb designed glassware, watches, clocks, ceramics, wallpaper, and typewriters for Remington. Calvin Furniture of Grand Rapids, MI produced McCobb's Irwin Collection of Scandinavian Modern-influenced furniture from 1953 to 1937. Paul McCobb died in 1969 at the age of 52.
