There’s a modern assumption that what is new will move us forward. But often, it is the old things, those that have endured, that quietly show us how to live, persist, and make sense of the world.
These paintings from 16th and 17th Century Europe have already lived many lives. They have hung in homes for 400 to 500 years, passing through changing hands and shifting histories, while continuing to offer something steady: meaning, beauty, and a sense of continuity.
In a world full of images that appear and disappear in an instant, these works ask us to slow down. They reconnect us with stories that have been lived with for centuries, and still feel alive today. To hang one in your home is to continue that tradition.
William Avery Fine Art is a carefully curated collection of Old Master paintings, based in London. William studied History at Princeton University, specialising in Renaissance Art History, and later held a Fulbright Scholarship in Ancient and Byzantine History at the University of Vienna. His expertise in Northern Renaissance art was deepened during more than a decade living in and around Bruges, the heart of Flemish painting.
He began in the art market as a collector himself, before gradually bringing works to a wider audience. Along the way, he has made notable discoveries, including works by Frans Francken the Younger and the Spanish Renaissance master Juan de Borgoña.
