Showrooms
Attention to detail. Luxury without pretense. Casual elegance. J Banks Design has set the standard for residential and hospitality design by incorporating these principles into each of their projects. Delivering designs that are both functional and beautiful has cultivated the trust of clients for over thirty years. J Banks Design’s professionally degreed designers understand that service, value and execution are the most important elements of great design and maintaining this focus has resulted in industry recognition and award winning designs.
The firm’s portfolio is diverse and spans the globe bringing forth a continual renewal of creativity. Their project travels have been the leading inspiration for The J Banks Collection - a collection of upholstery, casegoods and fabrics all designed by J Banks Design’s owner and president, Joni Vanderslice. The collection is available nationwide, and within the J Banks Retail Store – a home décor and lifestyle boutique that offers sophisticated selections from the worldwide marketplace.
J Banks Design’s projects are livable, yet sophisticated; elegant, yet casual; functional, yet breath-taking. The end result of a J Banks Design project always reflects the true character of their client.

Joni Vanderslice, ASID, founded J Banks Design in 1986. Since the company's inception she has served as Owner and President, growing the company into an internationally recognized design firm of 50 associates. As the overall design director for J Banks Design, Joni received the 2013 ASID Dora Gray Award for Outstanding Designer of the Year, and her leadership and visioning abilities procured the firm's titles of 2012 & 2009 Southeast Designer of the Year as well as a 2010 Southeast Residential Designer of the Year Award by the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC). Vanderslice's reputation has enabled her to secure high-end, publicly acclaimed hospitality projects throughout the US, Ireland, Italy, Mexico and the Caribbean. These projects challenge both her design abilities as well as her business acumen, as she navigates the meandering path of international business. Visiting a multitude of diverse markets keeps Vanderslice's creativity inspired, providing her with fresh insight for her many endeavors, including visionary direction for her furniture and fabric lines, the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture and Kravet Inc.
Immediately after moving to Hilton Head Island, Vanderslice committed herself to the betterment of her community through volunteer work and was named Woman of the Year in 1996. Vanderslice's entrepreneurial spirit guided her to serve as a founding board member for the Sea Pines Montessori Academy, Bank Meridian and the Valentine Project where she is actively building an orphanage in the Dares Salaam region of Tanzania, Africa. Vanderslice's ongoing commitment to enhancing the lives of those around her is perhaps most evident within the J Banks Design building. The 18,000-square-foot structure was the first LEED-certified building on Hilton Head Island, and only the twelfth in South Carolina. Her decision to build green resulted from wanting to gain first-hand knowledge of new design practices that could benefit her clients as well as provide a healthy environment for her employees.
Her never ending quest for new approaches allows her to make the complicated simple for her clients – a skill that has proven to be invaluable. This talent as well as her design experience, business approach, client relationships and life philosophies are the characteristics that have empowered Vanderslice to gain the trust and confidence of each of her clients. This trust has cultivated lifelong relationships which continue to foster the success of J Banks Design.
