Upper West Side Residence

This project wasn’t brought to fruition without overcoming major challenges. In this almost 4,000 square foot apartment in a historic building overlooking Central Park, the clients wanted individual rooms for their children and a home office as well. Although the apartment was quite large, it only had two bedrooms. Due to the historical nature of the building, there were strict rules that wouldn't allow any changes to be made to the original architecture. We had to get very creative to find a solution. Since the clients don't do a lot of entertaining, we decided to convert the formal dining room into two spaces with a freestanding partition that provided bookshelves, closed storage and even a Murphy bed leaving the walls and ceiling untouched. The original fireplaces, woodwork, and even radiator grates were nothing more than polished. The Art Moderne style and bold furnishings only accentuate the architecture. Although distinguished by classic profiles, the vintage-inspired furniture was chosen with the rituals and rigors of family life in mind: Armchairs have deep seats for curling up with a book, and the specimen-marble cocktail table is the perfect surface for family board games.
