Duncan Phyfe
American, 1768 - 1854
Born in Scotland in 1768, Duncan Phyfe, (original name Duncan Fife) became a leading American cabinetmaker and leader in the Neoclassical style. His family began cabinetmaking after settling in Albany, NY. While Phyfe did not originate the furniture style, he interpreted European design and became a major spokesman for Neoclassicism in the United States. By 1825, Phyfe had switched to the Empire style. The patronage of John Jacob Astor helped make Phyfe furniture very popular. Duncan Phyfe furniture tables and chairs remain highly sought today.
