Axel Salto

Danish, 1889 - 1961

Axel Johannes Salto (1889-1961) is considered a master of Danish design and best known for the sculptural, rather than functional, characteristics of his stoneware. He trained at the Copenhagen Academy of Art and later worked at Bing & Grondahl and Royal Copenhagen. His aesthetics draws from classical Greek mythology and Art Deco and often can be characterized into three categories: budding, sprouting and fluted.  Axel Salto stoneware remains popular today.
