Axel Salto

Danish, 1889 - 1961
Axel Salto (1889-1961) was a Danish ceramic artist known for his iconic organic designs and innovative glazing techniques. He studied at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory and later worked for the Bing & Grøndahl porcelain factory before starting his own studio in 1937.
Salto's work is characterized by his use of natural forms and motifs, such as seeds, shells, and leaves, which he would often repeat in an abstract and rhythmic pattern. His unique glazing techniques involved layering several glazes to create a textured and varied surface, which added to the organic and tactile quality of his pieces.
Salto's work has been widely exhibited and is held in the collections of several major museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He was also the recipient of several awards and honors, including a gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954.
