Carlo Scarpa

Italian, 1906 - 1978
Born in Venice, Carlo Scarpa was heavily influenced by Venetian culture, its materials, and its landscape. The architect and furniture designer is known for his instinctive approach to materials, incredible attention to detail, and for combining traditional crafts with modern manufacturing techniques. Scarpa was the director of Venini Glassworks between 1932 and 1947, where he perfected his glassblowing craft. After World War II, he began to receive international acclaim for his architecture. He later would travel to Japan, a country whose culture also greatly influenced his work. Carlo Scarpa lanterns lamps and other designs remain popular today.
