Gaetano Pesce
Italian, 1939
Gaetano Pesce is an Italian architect, designer, and artist, born on November 8, 1939, in La Spezia, Italy. He is considered one of the most important and influential designers of the 20th century.
Pesce graduated from the University of Venice in 1965 with a degree in architecture. He then worked as a designer for several prominent Italian companies, including Cassina, B&B Italia, and Vitra. In 1980, he moved to New York City and founded his own design studio, where he continued to create innovative and unconventional designs.
Pesce's work is known for its bold and unconventional forms, use of bright colors, and incorporation of unexpected materials. He has designed a wide range of products, including furniture, lighting, jewelry, and home accessories, as well as architectural projects.
Some of Pesce's most famous designs include the "Up" series of chairs, which feature a rounded, sculptural form and are made from a single piece of polyurethane foam, and the "Molteni" chair, which is made from a single block of resin and has a highly textured, organic shape.
Pesce's work has been exhibited at museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Compasso d'Oro award and the Good Design award.
