Johann Wilhelm Weinmann
American, 1683 - 1741
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683 - 1741) was born in Gardelegen, Germany on March 13, 1683. Arriving in Regensburg in 1710, he initially served as a pharmacist's assistant before seizing the opportunity to acquire his own apothecary shop in 1712. Through astute business acumen, Weinmann prospered, affording him the freedom to pursue his profound passion for botany.
Immersing himself in the study of plants, Weinmann established a botanical garden in Regensburg and published a Catalogus Alphabetico ordine exhibens Pharmaca in 1723. However, his most significant contribution to botanical knowledge came with the publication of Phytanthoza iconographia between 1737 and 1745.
This monumental work comprised eight folios containing a staggering 1025 hand-colored engravings, showcasing several thousand plant species. Weinmann enlisted the talents of esteemed artists, including Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770), to contribute to Phytanthoza iconographia, cementing its status as a seminal botanical reference.
