John Graz (1891–1980) was a pioneering Swiss-born artist, decorator, and architect who fundamentally reshaped the landscape of Brazilian modern furniture design. After relocating to São Paulo in 1920 and participating in the seminal 1922 Modern Art Week, Graz introduced a revolutionary concept of "total design" to Brazil, seamlessly merging interior architecture, furniture, and fine art. Famous for debuting Brazil's first Bauhaus-inspired tubular steel furniture in 1925, his later 1950s seating masterworks transitioned into highly sculptural, organic forms crafted from prized native tropical hardwoods like Caviúna and Imbuia. Because Graz focused heavily on custom interior commissions rather than mass industrial manufacturing, authentic John Graz vintage furniture pieces remain exceptionally rare, museum-quality collectibles celebrated worldwide by mid-century modern design enthusiasts.
